SAMPLE PROGRAMME:

Each programme is bespoke and specifically tailored to the needs and interests of the individual student; however, the modules below will provide a general picture of a typical programme created for a sixth form student applying to study medicine.

Scroll down for further details.

Anatomy

Often overlooked in A-Levels syllabi, anatomy is a key part of your interview arsenal. These sessions will focus on the head and neck, in particular on cranial nerves and muscles of the face.

Useful expansions may include a deeper understanding of the heart and chest cavity as a link with current studies;

Medical science

These sessions would provide you with an insight into recent breakthroughs in cancer research, tissue engineering, biomechanics, and integrated technology.

You will also be introduced to the theoretical approach behind a range of laboratory techniques in your field of interest.

Pathology 1: Immunology

You will develop a deeper understanding of the defences our body has to protect against infection, such as:

- Lymphocytes in detail

- Complement cascade

- the roles of cytokines such as interleukins

Pathology 2: infectious disease

You will gain an in-depth understanding of diseases which are superficially  mentioned in your A-Levels syllabus.

 but with a much greater level of detail. Material may include HIV, TB, malaria, creutzfeldt jakob, ringworm/aspergilloma,
prions, and Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy.

Pharmacology

In these sessions you will learn about key pharmacological concepts.

How can we treat diseases of interest? What is the BNF?  What do we do in cases of overdoses, anaphylaxis, and asthma? How do different drugs work?

At the end of the sessions, there will also be the option to learn more about the biochemistry behind different drugs.

Data Interpretation

You will practice blind graph interpretation, including:

- Dose-response curves, oxygen-saturation curves inc. decreasing affinity in Bohr shift  and higher affinity in foetal haemoglobin);

- Inspection of medical charts, ECGs, X-Rays, fundus photography (and other test results)

- Interpretation of genetic pedigrees to determine a pattern of inheritance;

ACADEMIC PATHWAY

The aim of these modules is  to provide you with impressive medical knowledge above the level expected from a sixth form student, to use it in both  your personal statement and in your interview. The ultimate goal is showcasing a true passion for the subject.

There is no better way to stand out from the crowd, than to demonstrate you know more about medicine than most other applicants.

Plan ahead

 League rankings are a poor tool to pick medical schools.

For example, Oxbridge is not necessarily the best choice for all candidates. We can help you pick the best choices for your profile.

Will you fare better with more patient contact hours, or a more textbook-based approach? Which universities offer courses integrated with a hospital? Would you rather learn through PBL or case studies?
Is cadaveric dissection offered at your top choice?

In our one-to-one sessions we would evaluate each course option and help you make the most balanced decision.

Deeds, not words

You will need tangible proof of your love for medicine to gain a place at a leading university. This is why you will need  to find adequate work experience, and to make it clear in your personal statement that you are serious about becoming a doctor.

Work Experience

You will receive guidance on how to obtain work experience, including how to phrase letters to local surgeries or hospitals, writing a CV, and finding contacts. Ultimately, you will gain honest insight into the career, as well as genuine anecdotes to later reflect upon, e.g. at the interview stage.

Personal Statement

We will guide you through the process of writing the personal statement step by step. Firstly, we will ask you to list all your relevant experiences.

Secondly, We will expand all of them in the STAR format, and evaluate the strongest paragraphs, building a structure and a core narrative that is original and compelling.

Lastly, we will work with you to cut the extra words.

"Thank you Ian, you have been an absolute lifesaver:

I had no idea where to start.

And thank you Bloomsbury Circle!"
